Egypt rejected idea of creating safe corridors for Gaza refugees
The Egyptian authorities discussed plans to provide assistance to the Gaza Strip population with the United States and other countries, but refused to take any steps to create humanitarian corridors for refugees leaving the enclave, Reuters reports
The US National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, said that the United States had held talks with Israel and Egypt about safe passage for civilians from the Gaza Strip. Despite that, Cairo rejected the idea of creating a humanitarian corridor.
As reported, Egypt has long restricted the influx of Gazans to its territory, even during the most violent conflicts. “Cairo, a frequent mediator between Israel and the Palestinians, always insists the two sides resolve conflicts within their borders, saying this the only way Palestinians can secure their right to statehood,” the publication reads.
An Egyptian security source said Egypt rejected the idea of creating safe corridors for civilians to protect ‘the right of Palestinians to hold on to their cause and their land’.
