EEC: freight traffic growth along North-South transport corridor may more than triple by 2030

Freight traffic along the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) by 2030 could more than triple compared to 2022 reaching up to 45 million tonnes per year – as noted by Minister for Energy and Infrastructure of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) Arzybek Kozhoshev at the first transport forum of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) member states, held in Tashkent

Arzybek Kozhoshev especially noted the efforts of the INSTC countries to develop it. Thus, in 2022, the total cargo flow along the corridor stood at 14.5 million tonnes, in 2023 it is expected to be 17 million tonnes, and by 2030 – up to 45 million tonnes.

According to the EEC Minister, the development of the China-Europe-China container transit route is currently also of particular importance for the EAEU member states. The Eurasian Railway Alliance, whose founders are Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, successfully operates here. The annual growth of transportation is 10 percent and by 2026 the volume will achieve 1 million containers.

REFERENCE

The International North-South International Transport Corridor (INSTC) is a multimodal route from St. Petersburg to the port of Mumbai (India) with a length of 7,200km. There are three INSTC routes: trans-Caspian (using railways and ports), as well as western and eastern (overland). In May, Russia and Iran signed documents on the completion of the last necessary section of the railway on the western North-South route: Rasht-Astara in Iran.
