Docking completed on China’s Shenzhen-Zhongshan undersea tunnel connected
In China, the docking of the final joint of the undersea tunnel connecting the cities of Shenzhen and Zhongshan was completed. The 24km tunnel is a key transport project in the Greater Bay Area, connecting Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Zhongshan, People’s Daily reports.
The length of the undersea tunnel is about 6.8km while the submersible section of the pipe reaches 5km and consists of 32 joints and one final joint. Over the past three years, 31 joints have been docked from the eastern and western sides to the centre.
The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Corridor, whose construction was launched in late 2016, is a cross-sea cluster project. It integrates bridges, islands, tunnels and underwater communications. Before the docking of the two parts of the underwater tunnel, the construction of bridges with a length of 17.2km was completed. Moreover, the main structure of the artificial bridge has also been completed. The Shenzhen-Zhongshan line is expected to open to traffic next year, enabling to reduce travel time between the two cities from an hour and a half to 30 minutes.
