Culture Ministry: dossier on Culture of Belarusian Duda submitted to UNESCO
The dossier of the Culture of the Belarusian Duda (bagpipe) – an element of the intangible historical and cultural heritage – has been submitted to the Secretariat of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, sb.by reports with reference to Belarus’ Culture Ministry
According to the cultural department, the application was preceded by a huge amount of work to study the traditions of duda playing in Belarus.
“In 2023, the Culture Ministry gave the status of historical and cultural value to the culture of the Belarusian duda, which exists in the Vitebsk, Grodno, Gomel, Minsk, Mogilev regions, alongside the city of Minsk. Currently, there are more than 32 bearers and 100 followers of this tradition,” the department explained.
The dossier was prepared by the Minsk Regional Executive Committee in 2024 under the co-ordination of the Culture Ministry in line with UNESCO requirements.
