Copenhagen’s street freely trading drugs will be closed
Pusher Street [a pusher refers to a person who sells drugs on a smaller scale] in Copenhagen, where drug dealing has been flourishing for a long time, will be closed in 2024, TASS reports
In his talk with the TV2 Kosmopol TV channel, Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard said, “I dare not promise any date today, but we will see how this plan will come into full force in the next six months. This means that Pusher Street will be closed this year.” He added that this should happen in co-operation with the Municipality of Copenhagen and the residents of the Christiania district, who had previously demanded that Pusher Street be closed forever.
In August 2023, the local government of the Free City of Christiania (the central district of Copenhagen, which has the status of a self-governing commune) appealed to the authorities to close the street where drug trafficking was conducted. The decision was made at a general meeting of residents of Christiania against the background of a shooting that happened on the street, during which one person was shot and four were injured. The local government of Christiania drew attention to the fact that it did not have the authority to close the street, and the final decision should be made by the city authorities.
Earlier, local residents blocked Pusher Street on their own in the ‘hope of freeing this place from the tyranny of criminal gangs’: the Danish police noted that the latter had recently behaved more defiantly and harshly, and significant resources were needed to combat them.
