“The Constitutional Court once said that this is part of the culture of an [ethnic] minority, but the court cannot tell the world that killing living creatures for pleasure is culture. Such a culture in quotation marks can lead us to have fun by killing animals first, and then by killing people,” the Colombia leader said during a signing ceremony of the law, broadcast on the page of the head of state’s administration on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

The law approved by Parliament implies a three-year transition period until bullfighting is completely banned. During this time, the country will still allow the holding of corraleja (a traditional type of bullfighting in Colombia), but in this case, the conditions that the government will set for the protection of animals must be met. According to the idea of the authorities, the transition period will enable people involved in bullfighting to find a new occupation to earn income.
