CIS against deployment of any type of weapon in space

A regular meeting of the Joint Advisory Commission on Disarmament Issues was held in Minsk on May 21st, sb.by reports with reference to the press service of the CIS Executive Committee

It is noted that the meeting was attended by representatives of Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, as well as employees of the CIS Executive Committee. A representative of Azerbaijan was present as an observer.

The problems of preventing an arms race in outer space were discussed, and the need to develop an appropriate international legally binding instrument banning the deployment of weapons of any kind in low-Earth orbit was emphasised.

The participants agreed to make joint efforts to globalise the initiative / political commitment not to be the first to deploy weapons in space and to continue building up co-operation on relevant international platforms. The commission plans to meet next time in Moscow in December 2024.
