CEC Chairman on Belarusian People’s Congress formation
Chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Igor Karpenko, at the request of journalists, commented on the process of forming the Belarusian People’s Congress
The CEC Head noted that the work on nominating delegates to the Belarusian People’s Congress is proceeding quite publicly, recalling that the principle of formation of the Belarusian People’s Congress is determined by the relevant legislation.
“One third of the delegates are ex officio members, including elected deputies of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly and members of the Council of the Republic. In addition, delegates to the Belarusian People’s Congress from local councils of deputies will be elected in line with the quota that the CEC has determined for the regions. At the same time, all 60 deputies of the Minsk City Council of Deputies will be delegates of the Belarusian People’s Congress. In accordance with quotas, 8 representatives will be elected from civil society actors, who will represent such a serious cross-section of social activists. Thus, the maximum composition of the Belarusian People’s Congress is up to 1,200 people,” explained Igor Karpenko.
