In 2023, Canada wildfires released more carbon dioxide than almost all countries of the world
An international team of climatologists reported that emissions from 2023’s Canadian wildfires exceeded 2.4bn tonnes of carbon dioxide – higher than the annual emissions of all countries of the world, except the US, India and China, TASS reports
The study says that last year’s Canadian wildfires smashed records, burning about seven times more land in Canada’s forests than the annual average over the previous four decades.
According to experts, these fires have led to the release of over 2.4bn tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere, which is more than the annual emissions of all countries except India, China and the US.
Calculations carried out by scientists showed that wildfires in Canada led to the release of 647 million tonnes of carbon into the atmosphere, which is equivalent to 2.4bn tonnes of carbon dioxide.
