Canada, Denmark reached settlement over disputed Hans Island
Canada and Denmark have resolved their dispute over territorial ownership of Hans Island – as informed by TASS with reference to The Globe and Mail, BelTA reports
The publication says the island in the Kennedy Channel will be divided between the Canadian territory of Nunavut and Greenland; the latter is an autonomous territory within Denmark.
According to unnamed Canadian sources, the states will announce their agreement on June 14th.
The conflict over the territorial ownership of Hans Island – which covers an area of 1.3 square kilometres – emerged in 1973, during negotiations between Denmark and Canada on the maritime border. The decision on the island’s status was postponed.
