By 2030, Belarus plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35%
This was stated in an interview by the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of Belarus, Andrei Khudyk
According to the expert, this refers to reducing harmful emissions to the level of 1990 and Belarus expects to achieve this without attracting additional funding.
“Belarus has been a party to the Paris Agreement for the past six years, which is directly related to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and regulates measures to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere,” noted the Minister. “Today we are successfully realising the action plan to implement the provisions of this agreement.”
The development of nuclear energy is to make a significant contribution to the reduction of emissions: with the commissioning of two units of the Belarusian nuclear power plant (BelNPP), these should drop by more than 7 million tonnes per year.
“Moreover, the field of renewable energy sources is being actively developed in our country,” stated Mr. Khudyk. “By the level of 2010, energy production from wind, solar and water has increased 15-fold while energy from biogas has raised 5-fold. Over the past six years, 25 photovoltaic stations, 5 hydroelectric power stations, 36 wind turbines, and 11 biogas complexes have been built in Belarus.
