BSU moved up 100 positions in QS subject ranking
The Belarusian State University (BSU) improved its results by 100 positions and remained Belarus’ only university in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) subject ranking, according to the updated lists, published across 46 scientific directions and 5 fields of knowledge
It is always difficult to stay in the world rankings of the best universities. This is tough competition. Educational institutions from all over the world are investing huge sums to advance in the rankings. It is important to participate in ratings in order to be visible in the market of educational services, as foreign students and partners make their choice based on the ratings.
The BSU has improved its results in the QS subject ranking by 100 positions. So far this is the only university in Belarus that has been present in QS subject rankings since 2017, which are being developed to help students choose universities in their areas of interest.
The BSU has moved up 100 places in the ‘Physics and Astronomy’ subject ranking, joining the 351-400 group. A total of 1,562 universities entered this category, meeting the requirements for the number of publications. Significant growth of the BSU is due to improved reputation among employers and an increase in the number of citations of scientific publications.
The ‘Physics and Astronomy’ ranking is topped by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA). Among the neighbouring countries, 17 Russian universities are represented in this category, including Lomonosov Moscow State University (34), Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (41), National Research Nuclear University MEPhI (73); eight Polish universities led by Warsaw University (151-200); Vilnius University (301-350), Taras Shevchenko National University of Kiev (401-450), Karazin Kharkov National University (551-600), University of Tartu (451-500).
Moreover, the BSU is first ranked in the ‘Natural Sciences’ subject rating. Here, alongside the assessment of the university reputation, the average number of citations of scientific publications and the H-index, the degree of internationality of research is taken into account. The Belarusian university in this field of knowledge is ranked 384th out of 1,503 selected applicants.
Alongside the QS subject ranking, the BSU is represented in the subject rankings of other agencies: the Shanghai ranking in ‘Physical Sciences’ with a position of 201+, THE (Times Higher Education) in ‘Engineering Sciences and Technologies’ (801+) and ‘Physical Sciences’ (1001+), US News in Physics (180) and Chemistry (676), and URAP in Physical Sciences (769).
