Britain’s Education Secretary says teenagers old enough to decide gender identity
16-year-olds are old enough to determine their gender identity – as noted by British Education Secretary Gillian Keegan, RIA Novosti reports
The British authorities decided to block Scottish bill that makes it easier for people in Scotland to legally change their gender.
“No, I don’t really think so. I was working at 16, I was paying tax at 16, I was making decisions for myself at 16,” Gillian Keegan told Sky News when asked if the proposed age was too low.
St the same time, the British Education Secretary said that she understands the decision of the authorities to block the bill proposed by Scotland, since the country cannot have two ‘potentially competing’ legislation. She also believes that there can be no ‘lack of clarity about gender and gender recognition’ in legislation.
Moreover, Gillian Keegan noted that this issue is not easy, as it is necessary to strike a balance between supporting children and ensuring that material is taught in schools that is appropriate for their age.
She added that the Scotland Act 1998, which allows the British government to block bills in the Scottish Parliament, has been approved by a majority vote. Therefore, she did not support the words of the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon, about a ‘full-frontal attack’ on the region’s democracy.
