Border Committee Chairman proposed ways to solve migration problem
Combating illegal migration is a key priority for Belarus’ migration policy, said Konstantin Molostov, Chairman of the State Border Committee, at the international conference in Minsk discussing regional co-operation in combating illegal migration
“Our border authorities keep the border secure while meeting conditions of our international treaties. Our operations are mainly focused on preventing, detecting, and shutting down organised illegal migration first of all, as well as denying illegal immigrants’ entry to the Republic of Belarus. Inside the country, we have built up effective interactions with the Interior Ministry, the Investigative Committee, the Foreign Ministry, the Red Cross, and Belarusian missions in various international organisations like the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the International Organisation for Migration, and the International Red Cross Committee, to co-ordinate joint events when it comes to combating illegal migration,” he said.
Mr. Molostov articulated key methods he believes can be used to solve the migration issues on the border and in the border areas.
“We think the main ways to solve this problem can be, first of all, promoting interactions at the Interior Ministry and Border Committee level via the border representative office. Second, it’s adherence by all sides of the border partnership to their commitments concerning border security and international humanitarian law. Third, it’s implementing prevention and service measures to combat illegal migration in co-operation with national and international organisations under the supervision of the Interior Ministry,” he elaborated.
At the same time, Mr. Molostov expressed his conviction that the illegal migration issue can only be solved via joint efforts which should be based on the tenets of international law.
