Belsky: world community selective in achieving SDGs, as confirmed by sanctions against Belarus
To achieve the global Sustainable Development Goals, the international community needs to take global efforts – as stated by Valery Belsky, the Deputy Chairman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly, during a meeting of the Council for Sustainable Development
He noted that today the world community is selectively approaching the achievement of the SDGs, as is evidenced by the sanctions against Belarus and other countries. The senator recalled that one sixth of the Earth’s land is currently under various economic restrictions, which negatively affects the achievement of goals in a global sense.
“The international community has somewhat moved away from the global understanding, and Belarus is faced with this in the first place, as it is now subjected to unprecedented and unmotivated pressure, including in the context of achieving the SDGs,” the parliamentarian noted.
He recalled that the European states have closed their airspace for Belarusian aircraft, and a number of border restrictions have been introduced. All this affects interpersonal contacts, including the inability of relatives and friends to see each other. Belsky reminded that the sanctions imposed against Belarus affected the country’s economy one way or another.
The senator drew attention to the peculiarities of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in these conditions, indicating the illogicality of actions to withdraw the country from the global agenda in the context of achieving common global goals. At the same time, he stressed that Belarus has everything necessary – political will, desire, intentions, and the focus of society – for constructive interaction on any issues. But only if questions are not raised under pressure; this concerns not only Belarus, but also any other state.
“With mutual desire, we will find a way to solve all problems,” the parliamentarian is convinced.
