Belarus ranked 7th among CIS in terms of population

Belarus is ranked 7th among the CIS member states and 97th worldwide in terms of population – according to the statistical review of Belarus’ National Statistical Committee (Belstat) dedicated to World Population Day which is celebrated annually on July 11th, sb.by reports

According to Belstat, as of January 1st, 2024, Belarus’ population totalled 9.156m people – accounting for 1.2 percent of Europe’s population and 0.1 percent of the global population. The population density stands at 44.1 people per 1sq.km. There’re 4.92m women in Belarus and 4.22m men. The proportion of women in the total population is 53.8 percent against 46.2 percent for men. The average age of the population as a whole is 41.5 years, among women the figure is 43.9 years and 38.7 years among men.

Belarus is ranked 7th among the CIS member states and 97th worldwide in terms of population. According to the 2019 census, the most numerous nationalities living in our country are Belarusians – 7.99m people, Russians – 707,000, Poles – 287,700, Ukrainians – 159,700, Jews – 13,700, Armenians – 9,400, and Tatars – 8,400.

According to the Belarusian statistical office, 7.19m people live in cities, and 1.95m live in rural areas. Moreover, 79.4 percent of women live in urban areas and 20.6 percent in rural areas, while 77.7 percent of men live in cities and 22.3 percent in villages.

By age group, adults (18-64 years) account for 63.1 percent of Belarus’ population, followed by children (0-17 years) who account for 19.7 percent and elderly (65 years and older) with 17.2 percent. The average age of marriage for women is 26.5 years and 28.8 for men.

The employment rate of the working-age population stands at 83.6 percent. By type of economic activity, 58.9 percent are involved in the service sector, 23.4 percent work in industry, 10.1 percent are engaged in agriculture, forestry and fisheries, and 7.6 percent specialise in construction. Among the population of Belarus, 95.8 percent of people work for wages, and 4.2 percent are employed for profit.
