Ivan Eismont, the Chairman of the Belarusian TV and Radio Company, read out the statistics that might be disappointing for some countries: by the end of 2023, Estonia demonstrated the largest economic downturn among the EU countries, Lithuania was the European leader in population decline, and the volume of rail freight traffic in Latvia in January-April 2024 decreased by 25 percent compared to the same period in 2023. In order to satisfy the desires of the West, the authorities of a number of states are ready to bring entire industries to their knees.
“The Baltic States – similarly to Poland – were quite close to us, even due to their geographical location and the fact that they have always had something that Belarus lacks: the sea. Therefore, we wished to go there, but it is extremely important for politicians to solve their own problems, and they do not think about their people at all. The decrease in the population of the Baltic States indicates that people are leaving these territories since they dislike them, they do not want to live there, the standard of living has changed for the worse,” Mr. Markov said.
The Information Minister stressed that residents of the Baltic States, unlike the authorities of these states, wanted to develop relations with Belarus, “They opened businesses with view on Belarus and Russia. We saw perfectly well how shopping tours were organised for Belarusians so that they could go to the sea and buy some goods. Businesses came here, and it was profitable. Belarusians spent money there, which supported the economies of these countries. Who benefited from this sanctions pressure, the breakdown of relations and the fence they have erected? It was necessary only for those who are now trying to find a place in the European Parliament. These people are just preparing a safety cushion and a good post for themselves," Mr. Markov added.
According to the Information Minister, the Baltic States’ authorities, unlike the President of Belarus, do not think about their countries.
