“Tens of thousands of soldiers and thousands of pieces of military hardware [are deployed near the Belarusian border], and we have serious fears that ‘the game’ may get out of control and lead to an escalation of conflict on a regional and even global scale, with disastrous consequences for everyone. There are enough nuclear weapons in Europe. Therefore, the escalation of tension is a direct path to World War III,” Mr. Ryzhenkov said.
Ten years ago, Minsk became a venue for fruitful negotiations on resolving the conflict in Ukraine, and the Foreign Minister stressed, “We are still offering our peacekeeping efforts, because we know and understand Russians and Ukrainians better than anyone else. We will do everything we can to achieve peace in the long-suffering Ukrainian land. We are interested in it more than others!”
Mr. Ryzhenkov added that 250,000+ Ukrainians have moved to Belarus through the Belarusian border with the European Union alone since the beginning of the conflict. “In recent times, the official figures stand at 12-15 thousand per month. Actually, this number is many times more than the number of refugees crossing our border on their way to the EU,” he said.
