Belarus' experience in biomass development presented at 14th session of IRENA Assembly

The actual power generation capacity of renewable energy installations in Belarus has increased 14-fold over the past 15 years and amounted to 632MW at the beginning of 2024, as announced at the 14th session of the Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), held in Abu Dhabi

In a report sent by the Energy Efficiency Department of the Republic of Belarus to the organising committee of the 14th session of the IRENA Assembly, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to the United Arab Emirates, Andrei Luchenok, noted that systematic and consistent work has been built in Belarus to achieve Sustainable Development Goal No. 7: Ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.

“The work carried out in this direction is based on the implementation of the sixth five-year Energy Saving state programme for 2021-2025. One of the important areas of improving energy security and energy independence of Belarus is the involvement of its own energy resources, including renewable energy sources, in the fuel and energy balance,” Andrei Luchenok stated.

According to Mr. Luchenok, the actual power generation capacity of renewable energy installations in Belarus has increased 14 times over the past 15 years and amounted to 632MW at the beginning of 2024.

“Every year, the country saves about 0.5m tonnes of conventional fuel, which is our contribution to preventing global climate change,” the diplomat noted, adding that biomass is the main renewable source in the balance of consumption of such energy resources.

Wood resources are available in all regions of Belarus, which makes them accessible to a wide range of consumers. There are about 3,800 boiler installations in the housing and communal services system, of which 73 per cent are operated using biofuels.

“All necessary infrastructure has been created for the use of biomass, starting with the procurement and delivery of fuel. Belarus has manufacturers of special equipment, as well as its own manufacturers of boiler equipment, which produce a full range of services: from the creation of a project to boiler installation turnkey commissioning,” the diplomat informed.

According to Andrei Luchenok, Belarus is interested both in the export supply of its equipment and the turnkey construction of boiler installations, and in the export of wood fuel to supply this equipment.

“Belarus has 64 production facilities for wood fuel pellets with an annual capacity of about 894,000 tonnes. Belarus is ready to export pellets to IRENA member countries and is open to co-operation for the benefit of the development of renewable energy worldwide,” Mr. Luchenok summed up.
