Belarus’ delegation taking part in celebration of 80th anniversary of Slovak National Uprising
On August 28th-29th, at the invitation of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, the Belarusian delegation is taking part in the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the Slovak National Uprising in Banská Bystrica, sb.by reports with reference to the Belarusian Foreign Ministry
The delegation includes descendants of veterans of the uprising and liberation of Czechoslovakia, as well as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to Austria Andrei Dapkiunas.
The Slovak government attaches great importance to perpetuating the memory of the victims of Nazism and the feat of the Red Army soldiers and officers who participated in the liberation of the country from the Nazi invaders in 1944-1945.
Slovak PM Robert Fico, as a sign of special respect for the feat of the Soviet people, welcomed a delegation of descendants of veterans of the uprising from Belarus and Russia at his residence in Bratislava on August 28th. The heads of the two countries’ diplomatic missions were also invited to the event.
An interested informal conversation took place about preserving the memory of the feat of the liberator soldiers and co-operation in preparing the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Victory over Nazism in WWII.

The Slovak National Uprising became an important stage in the struggle of the Slovak people against the German occupiers and the local collaborationist regime.
The uprising began on August 29th and lasted until late October 1944. In order to help the uprising, the Red Army launched the Eastern Carpathian Operation. The main battle sites are located in the mountainous area of central Slovakia around the town of Banská Bystrica.
