American researchers found black tea drinking can lengthen life
According to scientists, tea lovers are more likely to live longer than those who do not drink this drink every day, according to the study published in Annals of Internal Medicine, Medicalxpress reports
Tea contains substances that reduce inflammation. Scientists in China and Japan, where green tea is popular, have proven its health benefits. A new study examines the health effects of black tea across the UK.
Scientists from the US National Cancer Institute surveyed nearly half a million adults in the UK about their tea habits and then followed them for fourteen years. They also controlled for risk factors: health, socio-economic status, smoking, alcohol use, diet, age, race, and gender.
High tea consumption – two or more cups a day – reduces the risk of death from all causes by 9-13 percent compared to those who do not drink it at all. The temperature of the tea, the addition of milk or sugar did not change the results.
However, this study, based on observation of people’s habits and health, cannot determine cause and effect. “Observational studies like this always raise the question of whether there is something else in tea drinkers that makes them healthier,” said Marion Nestle, Professor of Nutrition, Food Studies and Public Health at New York University.
“If you’re already drinking one cup of tea a day, I think that’s good,” said lead study author Maki Inoue-Choi.
