Algeria officially applied to join BRICS

Algeria has filed a formal application to join the BRICS – as noted by Leila Zerrougu, the Special Envoy for Major International Partnerships at the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the National Community Abroad, RIA Novosti reports

This summer, Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboun announced that the country was ready to join the BRICS. Then he stressed that Algeria has fulfilled almost all the necessary conditions for this.

Later, the Russian Ambassador to Algeria, Valerian Shuvaev, stated that Moscow was not opposed to the country joining the organisation.

At the moment, BRICS consists of five states: Russia, China, Brazil, India and South Africa.
