Aleinik’s meetings in Geneva focused on co-operation with Nigeria, international security, refugees at the border

The Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus on International Affairs and National Security, Sergei Aleinik, has held a number of meetings on the side-lines of the 149th Assembly of Interparliamentary Union in Geneva, sb.by reports with reference to the Telegram channel of the Council of the Republic

Mr. Aleinik held a meeting with a delegation of parliamentarians from both chambers of the National Assembly of Nigeria and informed in detail about the opportunities for enhancing inter-parliamentary dialogue and bilateral trade, economic and humanitarian co-operation, and the implementation of joint projects. It is reported that the parties agreed to continue inter-parliamentary contacts, including through friendship groups.

The Belarusian MP held a meeting with Thomas Greminger, the Director of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy. The parties discussed issues of co-operation in the field of international security, Belarus' peace initiatives, potential ways to resolve conflicts, including in Ukraine, and the development of the concept of Eurasian security. Mr. Aleinik informed about the approaches of the Council of the Republic to the issues of ensuring safety at nuclear facilities in the context of armed conflicts.

According to the Council of the Republic, the MP also met with UNHCR's Assistant High Commissioner for Operations, Raouf Mazou. He informed about the situation with the forced expulsion of refugees on the western border of Belarus and incidents as a result of the actions of the border services of Poland and the Baltic States. Mr. Aleinik drew attention to the need to depoliticise the topic of combating illegal migration and providing protection to asylum seekers. "The parties agreed to continue consultations on this issue in order to find ways to resolve the situation in a long-term way," the Council of the Republic reported.
