Air defence systems to be deployed in Antwerp because of conflict in Ukraine

The DH publication reported that Bart De Wever, the Mayor of the Belgian city of Antwerp where Europe's second largest commercial port is located, intends to deploy Patriot air defence systems to potentially protect the port against the background of the conflict in Ukraine, RIA Novosti reports

The official explained his decision by the need to protect businesses and investments in the port. Bart De Wever fears that ‘businesses will not want to invest in Antwerp unless they are protected, as has already been done in Rotterdam and Hamburg’. He added that the city must be ‘able to defend itself’, and it will do everything possible to secure the necessary funding.

According to Bart De Wever, he is already conducting a fundraising campaign to deploy Patriot systems around the port of Antwerp.
