Africa to host its first UN Civil Society Conference
The 69th UN Civil Society Conference will be held in Nairobi and will be attended by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Kenyan President William Ruto and about 2,000 representatives of NGOs, educational and scientific institutions and governments, TASS reports
“For the first time, the conference will be held in the Global South. 70 percent out of the 2,000 participants, representatives of NGOs, are Africans, and 41 percent of them are young people,” Head of the UN Department of Global Communications Maher Nasser told a press conference in Nairobi, adding that on the last day of the conference, on May 10th, the Kenyan leader and the UN Secretary General will deliver speeches.
Maher Nasser underlined that this conference is being held in preparation for the Future Summit – due to take place in September 2024 in New York. He also noted that on the eve of the conference in Nairobi there will be a day of local NGOs, during which a charity marathon will be organised with the participation of Kenyan athletes and funds will be raised for residents of Kenya affected by the floods.
