The current version of the Greek Red Book contains 1.5 thousand representatives of flora and fauna. The list of endangered species includes 18.7 percent of plants, 22.6 percent of animals, and 34.8 percent of protozoan fungi inhabiting the territory of the country. As reported, due to the implementation of environmental protection measures, some species are no longer in ‘direct danger of extinction’, as a result of which they have joined the ‘low risk’ group. Among them are the sea turtle (Caretta caretta) and the steppe kestrel (Falco naumanni).

The Greek Foreign Ministry has informed about the readiness to create nature-protected marine parks in the Ionian and Aegean seas, on the territory of which it is planned to organise shelters for birds and mammals.
