1st self-expandable pulmonary artery valve implanted at Republican Research and Practical Centre for Paediatric Surgery
A novelty in action
The uniqueness of the Korean-made biological valve is that, once in the warm environment of the body, it begins to open up to the size intended by the design. The creation of this model increases the number of patients who can be operated on.
The Republican Research and Practical Centre for Paediatric Surgery has been performing the implantation of pulmonary artery valves by the puncture method since 2018. This is an effective technique, but there were limitations on the size range of devices. Therefore, quite a large number of patients could not be helped in this way. Self-expandable catheter valves were expected in Belarus, as well as throughout the world. Finally, the novelty has been introduced!
“These are implants of the highest quality, as the surgery showed,” the Director of the Republican Research and Practical Centre for Paediatric Surgery, Konstantin Drozdovsky, stressed.
“The interventions were performed under the guidance of a professor from South Korea, who has extensive experience in installing these devices. From now on, we will perform operations independently, and previously, our employees were trained in South Korea,” Konstantin Drozdovsky added.
Transcatheter implantation allows the pulmonary artery valve to be inserted and expanded through a small puncture. Immediately after expansion, it begins to fulfil its function. Now doctors have a new model at their disposal, which means new opportunities. It will definitely be possible to prolong life and enhance its quality for a very large number of people.
