TikTok to label AI-generated content

TikTok plans to start labelling images and videos uploaded to its video-sharing service that have been generated using artificial intelligence (AI), via a digital watermark system called Content Credentials, Reuters reports

Analysts express concerns that the AI-generated content could be used to interfere in the US election – due to take place in autumn. TikTok was already part of a group of 20 tech companies that signed an agreement earlier this year on a commitment to combat this.

“The company already tags AI-made content using tools inside the app, but the latest step will enable to mark videos and images created not using the service,” the publication reads.

The Content Credentials technology was developed by the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity group, co-founded by Adobe, Microsoft and other companies, but it can also be used by other companies. Its services have already been used by companies such as ChatGPT, the creator of OpenAI.
