US Navy: Iran seized Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman
The US Naval Forces’ Central Command tweeted that a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker was seized in the Gulf of Oman by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, RIA Novosti reports
“At about 13.15 local time on April 27th, the Advantage Sweet oil tanker under the flag of the Marshall Islands was seized by the Naval Forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy while transiting international waters,” the US Fifth Fleet said in a statement.
The US Navy stressed that Iran's actions ‘contradict international law and violate security and stability in the region’, adding that ‘the persecution of ships by Iran’ poses a threat to maritime security and the global economy. According to the Fifth Fleet of the US Navy, over the past two years, Iran has illegally seized at least five merchant ships in the Middle East.
