Mitskevich: Belarusian People’s Congress in its new status requires thorough preparation
Today, the Belarusian People’s Congress is a constitutional body, having its own legal framework and, accordingly, requiring special and thorough preparation – as noted by the Head of the Secretariat of the Belarusian People’s Congress, Valery Mitskevich, after the 1st meeting of the republican organising committee for the preparation and holding of the seventh Belarusian People’s Congress
He also informed about the results of the meeting that took place in the Council of Ministers on February 15th, “A plan has been prepared and approved. Work has been outlined to be conducted in the near future in preparation for the meeting.”
As far as the nomination of candidates for delegates to the Belarusian People’s Congress is concerned, Valery Mitskevich recalled that both the Constitution and the law clearly define the mechanism, “Everything is prepared from the legal point of view: who it will be, how they will be nominated and elected. The maximum number of delegates is 1,200, covering all areas envisaged by the Law On the Belarusian People’s Congress. Soon a single voting day will take place, with deputies of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly being elected who will all become delegates of the Belarusian People’s Congress. Deputies of local councils will be elected, who will begin to nominate and elect delegates from the region at regional councils’ sessions. As far as representatives of civil society are concerned, a mechanism is also provided here.”
The Head of the Secretariat of the Belarusian People’s Congress reported that the next meeting of the republican organising committee for the preparation and holding of the seventh Belarusian People’s Congress will be held tentatively on March 6th.
