Media: USA and other NATO countries unwilling to invite Ukraine
Some NATO countries, predominantly the US, are reluctant to extend an invitation to their alliance to Ukraine, despite pressure from Kiev that wants to improve its frontline positions ahead of possible talks with Russia, TASS reports
AFP news agency informed, citing an unnamed diplomat, that some countries are unwilling to take the ‘monumental decision’ to invite Ukraine into NATO. The issue, according to AFP, is not on the agenda of the next NATO foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels on December 3rd-4th. Ukraine insists on getting an invitation ahead of possible peace talks with Russia it wants to come to ‘from a position of strength’. According to AFP, US officials privately say such an invitation is unlikely during Joe Biden’s remaining time in the office.
"Such a gesture one month before the new administration will infuriate Trump, who will act contrary to this immediately," one NATO country diplomat is reported to say, adding that the subject will only be discussed seriously in 2025, ahead of the NATO summit scheduled for July.
As Reuters reported on November 29th, Ukrainian FM Andrii Sybiha called on the alliance to not wait for the conflict to end and issue an invitation to Ukraine at the foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels on December 3rd-4th.
