Lukashenko: West views our region as potential theatre of military operations

Washington continues to increase the US strike and offensive capabilities in Europe, and the Eastern European region is considered by the West as a potential theatre of military operations – as stated by the President of Belarus, Chairman of the Belarusian People’s Congress Aleksandr Lukashenko, on the second day of the Congress meeting

The Head of State said that, in December last year, the US missile defence bases were put into operation on Polish territory, “We regard the possibility of using the deployed Tomahawk cruise missiles capable of hitting targets in the depth of Belarus and the European part of the Russian Federation as a real threat. We record the facts of continuous aerial and space reconnaissance by Western states in the eastern direction. Almost the entire existing arsenal of NATO countries is involved, including strategic reconnaissance aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as the corresponding capabilities of partner countries.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko drew attention to the fact that, since 2023, the intensity of reconnaissance aviation by the united armed forces of NATO has increased significantly, “On average, there are about 40-50 sorties per week. Since 2019, Australian Air Force aircraft have been involved in radar control of the airspace of Belarus and the western regions of the Russian Federation. What are they doing here?”

All this is happening against the background of high military activity, and the President stressed, “The number of operational and combat training events in Poland and the Baltic States is increasing from year to year. At the same time, military formations of the US Armed Forces and other Western countries also take part in most of these exercises. The series of exercises currently being conducted in the European region by NATO and the US Armed Forces – Defender 2024 – has become unprecedented in its geographical scope and the number of forces and means involved (about 90 thousand people, up to 15 thousand pieces of equipment, around 300 aircraft, and more than 70 ships). The objectives of the events and the nature of the tasks being worked out, which are scheduled until the end of May, indicate that the West considers our region as a potential theatre of military operations. The enemy is determined: Russia and Belarus.”
