The Head of State touched upon a number of areas of co-operation between Belarus and the Russian capital and stressed that the republic is very eager to liaise with Moscow. Moreover, this city is very popular among Belarusians: as noted by the President, they actively visit it, especially now, on the eve of the New Year and Christmas holidays. “It is nearby, it is the town dear to us,” the Belarusian leader stressed.

Aleksandr Lukashenko also said what he is focusing his Russian colleague Vladimir Putin on, “To probably give priority to the route passing to Brest through Minsk in this large-scale construction of high-speed railways. It is a holy place for Russians and Belarusians, for Ukrainians, and for all the peoples of the Soviet Union. I think sooner or later (after visiting the UAE, I am absolutely convinced this will happen soon) Europe will open up for us. It will open up in the sense that Europe cannot exist without Russia. It cannot exist without us. That is why good high-speed roads are needed.”

The Belarusian leader assured that both he and Vladimir Putin will do everything to link Minsk and Moscow, while ‘not losing St. Petersburg’, “This triangle should work. I think that calmly, over time, Kiev will work with us as well, as there is no other way around it. After all, we are close people. Everything happens in life, but I think we will normalise our relationship.”

The Head of State thanked Sergei Sobyanin for his arrival and for the Moscow Days events in the Belarusian capital which will be launched on the evening of December 23rd. “It is important for us. People know Moscow very well, they love Moscow and learn a lot from it – especially in the field of culture,” he stressed.
