Belarus’ FM commented on statements made at EU summit on Ukraine
In the final statement of the EU summit on Ukraine, held on October 17th-18th in Brussels (Belgium), in reference to Belarus and Russia, the European Council once again mentioned its determination to ensure effective control at the bloc’s external borders by all available means and said that it would not allow to abuse ‘our values, including the right to asylum, and to undermine our democracies’
Belarus’ Foreign Ministry spokesperson Anatoly Glaz commented on the statements made in Brussels, “The topic of instrumentalisation of migration was cynically invented by Brussels in order to engage in blatant hypocrisy. With this statement, the European Council crossed out for itself all the provisions of international law relating to refugees and publicly admitted that all their longstanding rhetoric ‘about universal European values’ was just an illusion for external use. Values that interfere with the European bureaucrats themselves are immediately scrapped.”
European leaders are well aware that international law and European legislation clearly oblige them to treat refugees and asylum seekers humanely. They also know that the chaos at the border was caused by their irresponsible decisions to break off border co-operation with neighbouring countries. But they have no political resolve to rectify the situation. Actually, they do not care about the real solution of this problem and generally about refugees and migrants, whose beaten and maimed bodies are being thrown by the dozens to the Belarusian side of the border.
“It is also surprising to hear from the European Commission Chief about some ‘exceptionality’ of the migration situation on the border with Belarus. Less than half a percent of all migrants enter the EU through this section! There are two conclusions: either the aides did not reflect this fact, or Ursula von der Leyen does not bother to read information materials,” Anatoly Glaz underlined in his commentary.
“The most important is about the abuse of values and undermining democracy. We don’t need these modern European values, not even as a gift, while there has been no democracy in Brussels for a long time,” the Belarusian Foreign Ministry spokesperson concluded.
