As noted by the Head of State, representatives of all sectors of society, all professions and statuses have gathered today at the Palace of the Republic, “Among them are chief executives, military men, villagers, employees of enterprises and the service sector, entrepreneurs, teachers, doctors, figures of science and art, and sportsmen. These are true representatives of the nation, and – I am sure – patriots. [We are here for] a Slavic veche in its modern form. Simply speaking, it is a people’s assembly, which now stands above all branches of government, and which opinion should be taken into account by the Head of State. Importantly, among the delegates of our meeting today are deputies of local councils, representatives of civil society, and parliamentarians. We have not stepped aside the Soviet democratic traditions, supplementing them with modern ones that correspond to the spirit of our period and its history. This is our strength, and it shapes the nation, strengthens the national statehood.”
