Russian expert on Ignalina NPP: everything is disposed of without control
The Ignalina NPP is currently undergoing improper metal disposal – as stated by the Chairman of the Russian Ecological Society, Rashid Ismailov, in his talk with the STV TV channel, BelTA reports
“Our experts do not understand today how much the Ignalina NPP complies with safety requirements. Of course, there is pressure from the European Union, we have known this from the very beginning. The NPP was a bargaining chip for Lithuania's accession to the EU. However, there is information that all metal is being removed there, and everything is disposed of, let’s say, not in a very proper manner, without control,” Rashid Ismailov noted.
The Ignalina NPP was built during the Soviet Union, and afterwards it was decided to close it. To this day, its safety raises questions.
“This is a typical Soviet Union facility, so the decision on decommissioning should have been prepared using the knowledge of the supplying country,” the Head of the Radioactive Waste Management Office of the Department for Nuclear and Radiation Safety of the Belarusian Emergencies Ministry (Gosatomnadzor), Dmitry Pavlov, stressed.
