Belarusians will do everything to preserve the memory of the victorious veterans of the Great Patriotic War for centuries – as stated by President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko during a wreath-laying ceremony at the Victory Monument in Minsk

Addressing the participants of the ceremony, the Head of State noted, “Almost eighty years ago, the bloody tornado of the most terrible war in the history was stopped by the sacrificial feat of the Soviet people. This fact is forever fixed on the ruins of the Reichstag and in the act of unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany. The German war machine crashed against the unparalleled heroism and courage of our fathers, grandfathers and great-grandfathers. The Great Victory was forged at the front and in the rear for four long years. Both old and young stood up to fight the enemy.”

“Having paid for freedom with millions of lives of its sons and daughters, our great Motherland – the Soviet Union – saved humanity from enslavement, and some nations from complete extermination,” the President underlined.

Aleksandr Lukashenko pointed out that today we are proud of our ancestors, the victorious veterans, “We praise their heroic deed and – standing by the Eternal Flame – we swear that we will do everything to preserve their memory for centuries... We come here so that the terrible past does not repeat itself. If we forget this past, if we stop visiting these monuments, this terrible past will come to us. We must remember the conclusion made by mankind: as you treat the memory of your ancestors, especially those who gave you life and freedom, so the future generation will treat you. We are not eternal. We are all mortal. Please, come to the monuments, to the Eternal Flame, quietly and calmly, maybe without flowers. Remember and bow to those who gave us freedom if we don’t want to fight. We tell our children and grandchildren to cherish the truth about that war as the highest value. It is a symbol of the inseparable connection of generations for us, one of the foundations of the spiritual unity and cohesion of the nation.”
