State Border Committee: 44 cases of animal deaths recorded due to barriers on borders with Lithuania, Latvia and Poland

On April 26th, Smorgon border guards found a roe deer that got tangled in the wire of the European border fence on Lithuanian territory and informed the neighbouring side about the incident. An hour later, Lithuanian services arrived at the scene, but the roe deer died from the wounds, sb.by reports with reference to the Telegram channel of Belarus’ State Border Committee.

The Belarusian border department drew attention to the fact that 27 wild animals have died on the Lithuanian border since the beginning of the installation of dangerous barriers by neighbours: 16 moose, 10 roe deer and one deer.

“In total, since September 2021, the Belarusian side has recorded 44 cases of animal deaths that became victims of border fences in Lithuania, Latvia and Poland,” the State Border Committee of Belarus added.
