Lukashenko on potential trade turnover with Azerbaijan: $1bn to be very serious step

In the future, Belarus and Azerbaijan can raise their trade turnover from the current $400m to $1bn – as stated by President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko after today’s official talks with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev

In particular, the Head of State stated that he expects active work and a specific programme of co-operation with Azerbaijani partners from the members of the Belarusian delegation.

“It’s nice that today – at the suggestion of the Azerbaijani ministers – we began to talk about $1bn [a potential trade turnover between the two countries]. This will be a very big step. Maybe we will do this in two stages: at first, we’ll achieve a $500m mark within 12-18 months. By a certain time, we’ll definitely reach $1bn. We’ll do everything for this.”

In particular, the Belarusian leader added that this can be also achieved through import substitution and refusal to purchase products from unfriendly countries in favour of Belarusian or Azerbaijani goods.
