A new reactor with a capacity of 1,200GW will be built at the Bohunice nuclear power plant. The Slovenske Elektrarne utility company currently operates two nuclear power plants. The government said finance and economics ministers would discuss the details by late October.

“This decision reflects the recent nuclear expansion in Central and Eastern Europe. The neighbouring Czech Republic is currently seeking to build up to four nuclear power units. French state nuclear giant EDF and Korean company KHNP are two contenders for the project. Poland has entered into a deal with Westinghouse to build its first nuclear power plant, and Rosatom intends to build the fifth and sixth nuclear power units in Hungary,” the publication reads.

Slovakia produces more than 50 percent of its electricity from two nuclear power plants.
