UN concerned about transfer of depleted uranium shells to Kiev

The UN is concerned about the use of depleted uranium munitions anywhere in the world, including in Ukraine – as noted by Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary General Farhan Haq, TASS reports

During the briefing, he answered a question about the statements of the British Defence Ministry regarding the transfer of such weapons to Kiev, “You are well aware of our concerns about the use of depleted uranium anywhere in the world, and those would apply here.”

A representative of the organisation was asked to clarify whether the UK should be involved in the elimination of the consequences of the use of such munitions.

“That’s a question you should ask the appropriate authorities in the UK. As for us, we’re concerned about any placement of this anywhere in the world,” Haq said.

On April 25th, British Minister of State for the Armed Forces James Heappey, in a written response to questions from MP Kenny MacAskill from the Scottish Alba Party, confirmed that the UK had sent Ukraine thousands of shells for Challenger 2 tanks, including those with depleted uranium. At the same time, he added that London does not monitor their use and has no obligation to eliminate the consequences of their use after the end of the conflict.
