The survey participants expressed concern that a large number of newcomers could exacerbate the problem of housing shortages and create an additional burden on public services. However, employers in an industry such as healthcare, for example, claim that they will not be able to function without foreign workers.

Interviewees expressed concern that large numbers of newcomers could exacerbate the housing shortage and put additional strain on public services. However, employers in an industry such as healthcare, e.g., argue that they cannot function without foreign workers.

“Data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed net migration of 906,000 for the year to the end of June 2023, revised up from a previous estimate of 740,000, in what the ONS described as ‘unprecedented levels’ since 2021,” the publication reads.

According to the ONS, the number of migrants fell by 20 percent from the record high to 728,000 for the year to the end of June 2024, driven by the reduction in the number of dependants arriving with those on study visas after the rules were changed.
