MP Rusy on President’s decisions in the 1990s: people’s fate depended on them

Over thirty years of the institution of presidency in Belarus, a unique country has been created: it is beautiful, rich, self-sufficient, and respected – as noted by Mikhail Rusy, the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Legislation and State Building of the Council of the Republic, in his talk with STV, sb.by reports

“Over 30 years of the institution of the presidency and an absolutely new approach to governance, a unique country has been created: it is beautiful, rich, self-sufficient, and respected. As the Head of State notes, the base has been created over the past thirty years, and there is now a new approach. We have been running until recently but the time has come for us to jump," Mr. Rusy said.

The MP recalled the words of Aleksandr Lukashenko at the 7th Belarusian People's Congress: ‘Time has chosen us!’ They are addressed to the younger generation. “Meanwhile, at that time, the President chose us. He came with a small team, but – thanks to his approach, experience and our efforts – farms have been preserved. Over this time, we have created a unique agro-industrial complex that competes today in any market in terms of quality, price, traceability and environmental safety,” he added.

Mr. Rusy headed the Committee on Land Reform and Management at the Council of Ministers in the 1990s. At that time, there was lack of essentials (‘there was flour available for just three days’), coupons were common, and people had to spend hours in kilometre-long queues to buy the products they needed. “We have passed a unique path. The Head of State immediately put a stake on large-scale farms, giving every sector the opportunity to develop – including private and state-run ones,” Mr. Rusy recalled.

A programme of socio-economic development over the next five years was adopted at the 1st Belarusian People's Congress, and villages received priority. “The fate of people, the fate of the country depended on it. The Head of State outlined three points for Belarus’ further development: exports, housing, and food. It was primarily important to provide enough food to people, and the remaining points acted as a locomotive that inspired the development of the agricultural machinery production and the petrochemical complex. In the end, everything worked out all right, people believed,” Mr. Rusy stressed.

The resolution of all issues used to take place locally. The Head of State set the task to make sure that Belarusians produce everything they can domestically.
