MP: Belarus can act as example for many states in matters of green agenda and environmental protection

Belarus is one of the few countries that cares about future generations, and therefore it pays great attention to the environment – as noted by Aleksandr Bagel, a member of the Standing Committee of the Council of the Republic on Regional Policy and Local Self-Government, commenting on the results of a recent poll, according to which 77.9 percent of young people believe that the involvement of the Belarusian state into environmental protection issues has increased

“People in Belarus are concerned about the future, wishing to leave clean land for their children, so that they do not wear gas masks later. The leader of our country clearly understands this, and our youngsters understand this as well. According to the poll results, more than 65 percent of young people believe that the Belarusian nuclear energy industry meets global standards, and they support the green economy development. Everyone knows that the Belarusian leader would never allow the construction of an unsafe station,” the MP said.

Mr. Bagel added that Belarus’ nuclear power industry is much more environmentally friendly than burning oil or gas. “Moreover, the republic has preserved good traditions of holding subbotniks [when people work on Saturdays for the benefit of the national economy] and planting trees in forests. We pass on this habit of caring for nature to our younger generation. At the same time, at the recent Baku summit, Belarus’ President addressed the global community saying that it is impossible to solve the environmental problems with the efforts of just one country. We see how a number of Western countries, which contribute more to environmental pollution, relate to the topic of ecology. Some European representatives even did not come to the summit. In Baku, the Belarusian leader openly and honestly – as he always does – stated that he did not believe in ending wars that heavily pollute the environment. However, this does not negate the fact that Belarus can become an example for many states in matters of the green agenda and environmental protection.”
