More transplant surgeries performed

COVID restrictions have seriously complicated doctors’ work in Belarus but healthcare specialists have adapted to new realities and, in 2021, even increased the number of transplant surgeries – as informed by Oleg Rummo, the Director of the Minsk Scientific and Practical Centre for Surgery, Transplantology and Haematology

“In H1 2021, 255 operations were performed: 48 liver transplant surgeries, 181 – kidney (including four congenital), 22 – heart, and 4 – lung,” Mr. Rummo explained.

A year ago, our country was placed 19th regarding the number of transplant surgeries per million inhabitants: 464 organ transplant operations were performed then. In September 2020, our specialists performed the country's first kidney transplant surgery for a child.

Ny now, Belarusian doctors have mastered some new advanced techniques: i.e. joint operations for kidney transplant and cochlear implantation for patients with a high immunological risk.
