Media: weak winds to cause Germany’s electricity prices to rise again
Cold weather and weak winds will result in a drop in profitability for the German energy system and a price hike for consumers, Bloomberg reports
It is reported that Germany’s energy margin (a measure of available capacity minus expected demand) may fall to a minimum. At the same time, electricity demand is above seasonal norms due to colder weather.
The publication points out that Europe’s largest economy has faced numerous windless periods this winter. This forced Germany to either burn fossil fuels or import French electricity.
In late November, Germany was already facing a sharp jump in electricity prices due to a predicted decline in wind generation. In such a situation, this European country remains dependent on polluting coal, oil and gas. Moreover, the profitability of coal burning increased to the highest level since September.
