“He is a former diplomat, a very smart person who knows many languages. I always appreciate his advice and even support,” the Belarusian leader noted. “There is a lot of talk about sovereignty and independence now. Who is right, who is guilty, who attacks whom, who defends whose interests. He came up to me and said that he remembers one of my speeches, a very wise one. I asked him what the wisdom was and what kind of thesis I put forward there. He replied: “You said very simply. Disputes then were going where is Ukraine, where is Russia, where is Belarus... Were there then such states as Belarus or not... You said the following phrase: well, there was no Belarus at some time, but now it is, and that’s it. This should be reckoned with.”
