KGB Chief: background for serious world conflict being created
A socio-political situation in Belarus is stable at the moment – as informed by the Chairman of the State Security Committee, Ivan Tertel, on meeting labour teams in Mogilev, BelTA reports
"A socio-political situation in Belarus is stable at the moment. The measures taken by the concerned authorities make it possible to control the situation, ensuring order and security in the country. Paradoxically, it is precisely in this regard that we are registering an increase in the threat from the territory of Lithuania, Latvia, Poland and Ukraine. The fugitives who are staying in the neighbouring countries no longer see the possibility of peaceful changes and are actively developing a forceful scenario for changing the constitutional order," Mr. Tertel said.
According to the KGB Chief, the modern global situation is somewhat reminiscent of the run-up to WWI and WWII. "Based on information from different, including closed, sources, the background for a serious global conflict is now being created. The first sign of this is the formation of coalitions on a global scale, which we are currently observing. On the one hand, it is the collective West – which has been in the coalition for a long time and is trying to expand it. On the other hand, the countries that disagree with such a policy of world domination are forming their own coalition: these are primarily China, Russia, Iran and some others,” he said.
If the situation does not improve now, the relationship will become even more acute, and the consequences may become unpredictable. "The only positive thing is that we, as a special service, know for sure that the United States has mathematically calculated the consequences of an exchange of nuclear strikes and come to the conclusion that it would be a catastrophe for the whole of humanity. Actually, at this stage, such a situation should have been avoided. We also know on a documentary level that nuclear strikes, as it was during the existence of the Soviet Union, are planned – including on our territory," Mr. Tertel said. “There are concrete plans for the entry of military contingents into our territory, including from the territory of Poland. There is information about the 101st Airborne Division of the United States, which is already partially based on the neighbouring territory."
However, according to the KGB Chief, this was a predictable situation. "Around 10-15 years ago, geopolitical strategists said that such a situation in the world would develop. We also knew about this, so our Head of State – and Belarus as a peace-loving country as a whole – proposed a number of initiatives in order to come to an agreement and not aggravate the situation that we are witnessing now. Unfortunately, those initiatives were not supported,” he said.
As noted by Mr. Tertel, back in 2013-2014, Belarus was ready to actively participate in stabilising the situation in the south-east of Ukraine, but ‘the West did not support it, sadly’. “We see the result of those decisions now. It is clear why it did not support: there were specific plans regarding the movement into the territory of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, the post-Soviet space – and we knew of that. This policy is also currently being implemented," he noted. “Therefore, the situation in Belarus since 2020 and at present should be linked to this context. This is an attempt of a geopolitical redistribution of our region and the world order as a whole."
The year 2020 became a turning point in the history of Belarus. "In 2020, there was an attempted coup, there were mass riots. It was not accidental, it was planned – but failed. Sanctions became a new stage, and the sanctions pressure has had a serious impact on us. Here, representatives of the state administration and enterprises are present who are forced to rebuild their work in a new way, including sales, purchases, and payments. It is not that simple, but we are slowly surviving and reorienting. Against the background of all these events, it is a crisis for some and it is a chance for others to become stronger and survive – as our President rightly stressed. This story is about us: we will become stronger and survive," Mr. Tertel concluded.
