Expert: Lukashenko offered peace and security programme at CSTO summit
President Aleksandr Lukashenko offered a peace and security programme on a global scale, said Vadim Gigin, House of Representatives MP and General Director of the National Library, when commenting to Alfa Radio on the Belarusian leader’s statements at the Collective Security Treaty Organisation summit in Astana (Kazakhstan)
According to the MP, President Lukashenko’s proposals are vital for both the Eurasian continent and the entire planet.
“We are talking, more or less, about a peace and security programme offered by the President for the Eurasian continent primarily. But it is key for the global security in general, as well,” he said.
Mr. Gigin listed the points President Lukashenko had included into his proposal: peace with no preconditions, removal of sanctions, and control over deadly weapons and new technologies that can pose a threat in the future.
“The President said that the Eurasian security should be enforced by the Eurasian nations. That was a signal to the US first and foremost that they should leave the Eurasian security to Eurasians!” explained the expert.
As he pointed out, there are at least 6 nuclear states on the continent, “You think we won’t be able to ensure our own security? What do we need military bases and nuclear weapons from the other side of the ocean here for?”
He went on to emphasise that a number of statements and proposals that form that specific programme are a subject for serious reviews.
“They supported the Eurasian Charter of Diversity and Multipolarity offered by Belarus. Our geopolitical influence is growing,” the MP added.
Touching on the CSTO operations, he made a point that the organisation is performing a number of functions (like co-ordinating anti-terrorism efforts, law enforcement, security consultations at all levels), but faces some serious challenges as well.
