BRSM Youth Union leader on preservation of student construction movement in Belarus: it’s unique tradition

In Belarus, like in no other country in the post-Soviet space, unique conditions have been created for the development of the student construction movement, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Belarusian Republican Youth Union (BRSM) Aleksandr Lukyanov noted before today's closing ceremony of the third labour semester of 2024

“In the early days of our young republic, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the student construction movement was preserved by the decision of the President. And today it is developing. In Belarus, like in no other country in the post-Soviet space, unique conditions have been created for the development of the student movement. The Belarusian Republican Youth Union has been entrusted with the most important function of organising this work. The structure has been built up: from the line level of primary organisations to the city, district and regional levels. The republican headquarters of labour affairs annually works on signing agreements with more than 2,000 employers: the organisations that provide young people with the opportunity to work. The average wages of those working as part of student construction teams range from Br800 to Br3,500 at various sites,” Mr. Lukyanov noted.

According to him, BRSM is currently working to ensure that young people receive not only theoretical and practical training, but also a certificate of labour specialty.

“The facilities with the status of the All-Belarusian Youth Construction Site are the brand of the student team movement. Starting from 2004, when the first construction site was the Avgustovsky Canal, now it is the Khatyn Memorial, the Belarusian nuclear power plant in Ostrovets, the patriotic education centre in Brest.... Young people actively participate in the student team movement and become an important element in shaping the future of our economy.”

Besides, as the BRSM leader added, alongside Belarus, our young people go to work in Russia, “This year we worked in the Orlyonok children’s health resort, we continue to build the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) in the Urals, while last year we went to the Vostochny Cosmodrome.”
